Social media marketing is the use of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to gain traffic or attention to your business and/or website.

"Social Media" is a term that encompasses many websites that offer radically different social actions.  These websites include:

Twitter - A real-time information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting. At the heart of Twitter are small bursts of information called Tweets. Each Tweet is 140 characters in length, but don't let the small size fool you -- you can share a lot with a little space. Connected to each Tweet is a rich details pane that provides additional information, deeper context and embedded media. You can tell your story within your Tweet, or you can think of a Tweet as the headline, and use the details pane to tell the rest with photos, videos and other media content.  Twitter has gained popularity worldwide and is estimated to have 200 million users.

Facebook - As of January 2011, Facebook has more than 600 million active users. Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics.

LinkedIn - is a business-oriented social networking site. It is mainly used for professional networking. As of March 2011, LinkedIn reports more than 100 million registered users spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

YouTube - is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos.  On average over 100 million videos are watched each day on YouTube.

Blogger - is a blog-publishing service that allows private or multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries.  There are an estimated 25 million blogs online and Blogger hosts approximately 35% of those blogs.
